Round Clay Flue Liners
Question: Why are square and rectangular
flue liners used for masonry chimneys instead
of rounds?
Answer: Because that is the way it has
always been done.
From a design and engineering standpoint a
square/rectangular flue liner doesn’t make a
lot of sense. A round flue is 20% more
efficient than the traditional square or
rectangular liners. That is why when sizing a
chimney for a fireplace, the calculation is
based on 8% of fireplace face opening if
using a round flue vs. 10% for the
square/rectangular ones.
The round flue has a clean and efficient draw.
The squares and rectangles have cold
corners with eddy currents that inhibit draw.
Perhaps the real reason for using a square or
rectangle is that it is a “no-brainer” to stack
brick around! Click here for more information
